FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Functional medicine deals with evaluating how the body and its systems are functioning and working together. Instead of just observing typical signs and symptoms, such as, High Blood Pressure, the doctor will seek to determine WHY the blood pressure is high.

Consultation:

An extensive history of the patients habits, past and present health concerns, medications, supplements, diet, and symptoms are first explored.

Physical Examination:

A full physical examination is needed to assess the overall health status and function of the body. This includes: vital signs, spinal evaluation, neurological, circulation, abdomen, heart/ lungs, and skin/ hair/nails. This information aids the doctor in accessing metabolic and hormonal function of your body.

Blood Work:

Blood work is needed to check the body's chemical processing, including lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides etc), thyroid hormones, complete blood count, complete metabolic count (liver, kidneys, electrolytes), iron, and ferritin, and glucose, insulin/ A1C. Depending on the patients condition, other tests may be included such as sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone etc.), virus antibodies, arthritis panels, or autoimmune panels. These tests are performed at local labs, such as Quest, Lab Corp, or Bio reference Labs.

Specialized testing:

Food sensitivity testing - blood work to evaluate if a patient is having an inflammatory or immune response to foods is important in assessing autoimmune conditions, stomach or intestinal problems, and skin rashes or allergies.

Saliva Testing - is used to evaluate Adrenal stress to check cortisol levels, and Hormone imbalance and metabolism - to check female and male hormones which may be responsible for symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, infertility, sexual dysfunction or depression.

Urine testing - Organic Acid testing is used to check metabolic excretion of normal metabolism- which shows how well your body is breaking down fats, sugars, neurotransmitters, and how well you create intracellular energy. Also toxins can be measured, such as heavy metal or pesticides, which may be indicated in some conditions - such as neuropathy, autoimmune, or hormonal problems.

Stool testing - is used to evaluate parasites, yeast overgrowth, digestion, and H. Pylori infections in the bowel. This is helpful in evaluating patients with stomach pain, IBS, Crohns or Ulcerative colitis, or other gastrointestinal issues.
